Two MiEV Evolution III electric cars take part in a famous race.

In this year’s edition of the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb competition in Colorado (23-29 June)  Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will put up two new MiEV Evolution III four-wheel drive electric cars. The Japanese company took part in the Electric Division of the race for two years (2012 and 2013). This year they hope to win the new Electric Modified Division.

The car uses many enhanced solutions from the previous version such as high capacity batteries, efficient electric motor or electrically powered four-wheel drive with four separate motors. In order to reduce the weight of the car the engineers modified the chassis pipe frame using new materials. Total output of all four engines increased from 400 to 450 kW, which necessitated a change of tyres to wider ones (330/680-18 instead of 260/650-18). The company also improved the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle and increased the downforce by introducing a new optimised spoiler made of carbon fibre. It is worth mentioning that the final shape of the spoiler was created based on tests performed in the wind tunnel. Moreover, the modification of the integrated all wheel control system (S-AWC) resulted in better traction and less slip when driving at borderline grip values. All the introduced changes enable the race car to perform her best while enabling the driver to maintain high level of control.

The team

The team is composed of the same drivers as last year. The first Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution III will be driven by Hiroshi Masuoka, the team leader and a two-time champion of Dakar race, who took the second place during last year’s Electric Division race behind the wheel of MiEV Evolution II. The second Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution III will be driven by Greg Tracy, a six-time motorcycle winner of the general classification Pikes Peak race and last year’s third in Electric Division which he took in MiEV Evolution II.

The technical director of the team and the engineers are mostly from the Development Engineering Office of MMC. They will be responsible for the maintenance of the cars during the race as well as for collecting data which will be used by Mitsubishi in their work on EV technologies, the integrated all wheel control system (S-AWC) and “e-EVOLUTION”, which connects the electrical drive with S-AWC

The race: Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is an automotive event organised annually in Colorado. The participants race to the summit of Pikes Peak mountain. The competition started in 1916 and in 2014 Colorado will host its 92nd edition. The course starts at an altitude of 2862 metres and leads through 156 turns, finishing after 20 kilometres at 4301 metres. This means that the participants have to climb 1439 metres and deal with such issues as the change of pressure, temperature and other weather conditions. The week of the 2014 race will start on Monday (23 June) with a registration and a technical audit. Next day, the teams have to complete a mandatory training session. More training sessions and qualifications will take place between 25 and 27 June when the track is divided into three sections – Bottom, Middle and Upper. They will later be assigned to particular race days. The times achieved by the participants during training sessions in the Bottom part will serve as basis for selecting the order of starts in each class during the proper race which will take place on 29th June.

“This is the third Pikes Peak for MMC. The i-MiEV Evolution we entered in 2012 used the motors, battery and many other components from the production i-MiEV model. It was our first Pikes Peak but our second place finish in the Electric Division proved that MMC’s electric vehicle technologies were more than capable of withstanding the rigors of the tough world of motor racing. Last year, our second Pikes Peak, we entered the MiEV Evolution II, fitted with many advance development parts, with the objective of feeding back the data and knowhow gained into future production models. MiEV Evolution II also used the S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system, one of MMC’s foremost technologies, to realize a major improvement in performance. Unfortunately we just missed victory, finishing second in our division, when a sudden downpour just before our start time prevented us from using slick tyres. This year sees our third attempt at this great race and we will be going for victory in the Electric Modified Division. MiEV Evolution III is an improved version of last year’s machine and brings significantly better cornering performance after improvements to the motors, aerodynamics and tires. The driver can feel confident about extracting every ounce of the increased performance, thanks to evolutionary development of the S-AWC system. This has resulted in a quantum leap in vehicle stability on winding roads, and I am confident that MiEV Evolution III will demonstrate the full extent of its potential over a course such as Pikes Peak with its 156 corners. Together with Greg Tracy, my teammate from last year, we will be going flat out for victory in the Electric Modified Division. We look forward to your support.”
